The decaying forest / Lahoava metsä

On photo journalism course I made a photographic reportage of old forests (primeval forests) or forests in their "natural" stage. These forests are now a days very rare. Here are some of the photos. // Kuvajournalismi-kurssilla tein kuvareportaasin aarniometsistä ja "luonnontilaisista" metsistä, joita on enää hyvin vähän Suomessa. Tässä muutamia kuvia.
In it's natural stage forest has lots of fallen and decaying trees. These primeval forests are a home for many plants, fungi and animals that live on decaying wood material. Because of the destroying of primeval forests many species that are dependent on decaying trees have become rare. // Luonnontilaisissa metsissä on paljon kaatuneita ja lahoavia puita. Vanha metsä on ainutlaatuinen elintila lahopuulla eläville lajeille. Luonnontilaisten metsien häviämisen myötä monet lahopuulla elävät lajit ovat harvinaistuneet.


For instance many of the beetles are dependent on decaying wood. // Esimerkiksi monet kovakuoriaiset ovat riippuvaisia lahoavista puista.

Fallen trees create open areas in the forest which enable saplings to grow. This makes primeval forests diverse. // Kaatuneet puut luovat metsään aukkoja, jotka mahdollistavat puuntaimien synnyn. Puuston rakenne on luonnontilaisissa metsissä monipuolinen ja kerrostunut.
Usneas are one sign of a healthy forest since they are very sensitive to air pollution and only grow in fresh air conditions. // Pitkät naavat ovat eräs terveen metsän merkki, sillä naavat ovat hyvin herkkiä ilmansaasteille.

In Haltiala primeval forest (in North Helsinki) there are many decaying naturally fallen trees and the forest is untouched. While visiting you are not allowed to step away from the path since the area is preserved. // Haltialan aarnialueella (Pohjois-Helsingissä) on useita lahoavia itsestään kaatuneita puita ja luonto on koskematonta. Haltialassa tulee pysytellä merkityllä polulla sillä alue on rauhoitettu luonnonsuojelulain nojalla.

At Repovesi they try to actively create natural like forest for instance by "helping" the trees to fall. They try to create areas where the species that depend on decaying wood can live.// Repovedellä metsiä sensijaan ennallistetaan aktiivisesti ihmistoimin. Esimerkiksi puita "autetaan" kaatumaan kaulaamalla niitä. Tämä luo lahopuulla eläville lajeille uusia elinympäristöjä aarniometsien harvinaistuessa.
