One bee

A bee had fallen in the lake and was struggling for it's life. A man was rowing a boat nearby and saw the bee. Man laid the paddle in the water close to the bee and it climbed up the paddle into the boat. Wet bee skittered across the boat and sat at the back seat where it started to dry up it's furry coat and little bee wings. As the sunlight had dried it fully it flew up into the blue sky.

Muumien ajatuksia taiteesta / The Moomins discuss art

Olen ollut juuri alkaneen loman kunniaksi kipeänä viisi päivää. Flunssan lamaannuttamana olen katsonut muun muassa muumeja. Katsomistani jaksoista mielenkiintoisin oli: 82/101 Hiekkaveistoksia, jossa muumit kohtaavat monia taiteeseen liittyviä stereotypioita.

Jäin pohtimaan voisiko jakson jotakin osaa hyödyntää taideopetuksessa keskustelunavaajana.

Myy (katsoo Vilijonkan piirrustusta): Esittääkö se puuta? Kaunis, tosin se ei näytä puulta..
Vilijonkka: Ärrrrr.
Myy: ...ainakaan kovin paljon.
Muumipappa: Myy hyvä, sehän on vasta luonnos, jonkinlainen hahmotelma. Rouva Vilijonkka maalaa lopullisen puun kankaalle.
Myy: Ai minusta tuntuu, että siinä menee paljon työtä hukkaan.
Vilijonkka: Hukkaan?
Myy: Puita näkee muutenkin.
Vilijonkka: Pikku neidillä ei näytä olevan alkeellisinta tajuakaan taiteesta.
Myy: Ei vai? Mihin tarvitaan taidepuita kun ympärillä kasvaa oikeita.
Vilijonkka: Hömm...taide on..kulttuuria. Se kohottaa ja ylevöittää henkisesti.
Myy: Hmm...Pötypuhetta minun henkeni ei ylevöidy.
Vilijonkka: Ei vilkaisu riitä, sinä senkin.

In English: I've had a flu for the last five days and I've been watching The Moomins (= Finnish cartoon). The most interesting episode I watched was episode 82/101 in which moomins discuss art. It seems that Mrs Fillyjonk considers herself as a true artist and she claims that Little My cannot understand art. Mrs Fillyjonk's character underlines elitist and stereotypic art views. The episode also addresses the fact that the artist cannot control what the viewer sees in the art piece and that people can feel insecurity while making art. I wonder if I could use this episode as a conversation opener in art class someday.

Summary of my MA thesis about why young photographers still use film

Vaikuttaisi siltä, että olen muutaman viikon kuluttua taiteen maisteri. Esittelin opinnäytteeni eilen tarkastustilaisuudessa ja työ hyväksyttiin. Osastollamme tarkastustilaisuudessa opinnäytteen tekijä ensin itse esittelee 30 minuuttia opinnäytteensä sisältöä ja sen jälkeen tarkastajat ja yleisö kommentoivat toiset 30 minuuttia. Opinnäytettä tehdessä tuntui vaikealta ahtaa laaja aineisto ja teoria sataan sivuun tekstiä. Vielä mahdottomammalta tuntui sulloa tuo sadan sivun kokonaisuus 30 minuutin esitykseen. Huh. Vaihtoehtoja oli kaksi. Puhua pikakelausvauhdilla tai jättää 90% sanomatta. Valitsin jälkimmäisen vaihtoehdon.

Sain pääasiassa mieltä ylentävää palautetta. Kritiikki kohdistui enimmäkseen muodollisiin seikkoihin, taittoon sekä työn nimeen. Kritiikki oli mielestäni aiheellista ja osuvaa. Hyvä kritiikki on aina jees. Positiivista palautetta sain kielestä, sisällöstä ja kyvystä tarkastella omaa toimintaa kriittisesti.

In my MA thesis I studied why photography students still use film and what do they think about the digitalization of photography. I gathered my research data with questionnaire which I sent to 13 different photography schools in Finland. I got 46 replies and the average age of the respondent was 23. Most of the replies were from Aalto University of Arts and Design (26%) and Lahti University of Applied Scieces (24%).

Here's some of the findings:

• Family & school have supported the analog activities of the respondents: many had gotten their analog camera from a family member and many told they used school darkrooms and cameras.
• Students felt that the analog process differs from digital process. When you shoot on film you can't see the picture right away and you know that there's only a limited amount of frames available. As a result you concentrate more and use more judgement. You can see this in the results. Some of the students addressed that especially the usage of medium/large format cameras affects the process and the results. 
• Digital process was described as fast, easy and cheap. Working on a computer was also considered easy. 
• Respondents described analog photographs positively - most common positive features were tones, grains and materiality.
• Respondents described digital photographs more negatively - most commonly as "code".
• Analog methods were used mostly in "art projects" and "own projects" where as digital photography was used in work and school related commissions.
• Most of the students felt that the analog photograph can be stored more safely than the digital photograph. Many considered computers and hardrives as unsafe storage platforms.
• 63% had tried to manipulate their digital photograph to look like an analog photograph (this is related to concepts of simulation & imitation).
• Many felt that shooting on film is some kind of a trend phenomenon which is related to subcultures (hipsters & lomography).
• Filmlook applications like Instagram and Hipstamatic aroused variety of emotions - some thought they are funny and some considered them irritating.
• Over 80% of the respondents use social media. Some said that through social media you can get your work noticed.
• 89% had displayed their digital photos online - 76% had displayed their analog photos online.
• Many felt that the digitalization of photography (cheaper professional cameras etc.) has toughen the competition - it is harder to make a living as a photographer. Still many felt there's always a demand for good pictures made by professionals. 
• Many of the students use hybrid-strategy which means that they shoot on film and afterwards scan the image and process the picture digitally.
• In the activities of the students the analog and digital processes are interlaced and used side by side, so we can talk about some kind of hybrid culture.

As a result I suggested new kind of analog photography courses to photography schools and hoped that it would be possible for students to continue using the analog method since there's obviously a place for it. I underlined that there should be a freedom of choice at least (or especially) in the context of art.

My English is not perfect and I didn't have the energy to use dictionary or grammar book so sorry for all the mistakes(!!!).

Tällä viikolla ripustettiin uutta näyttelyä valokuvataiteen museolle. Näyttely esittelee laajasti valokuvaopiskelijoiden taidetta.
Käykäähän katsomassa! Näyttely aukeaa 8.5. Itse en osallistu teoksella näyttelyyn, mutta siellä on mun kavereiden
hienoja duuneja. Kuvasin animaatioita ripustuksesta torstaina ja perjantaina.

In English: Next week a new exhibition opens at the Finnish Museum of Photography. As they state "The exhibition is a
comprehensive overview of works by today's photography students." I didn't participate with an art piece, but I shot some
animations as students and museum employees built the exhibition.

Miksi nuoret kuvaavat filmille?

Palautin mun gradun pari viikkoa sitten. Mun on vaikeaa uskoa, että onnistuin kirjoittamaan 120 sivua tekstiä noin kolmessa kuukaudessa.
Lisäksi taitoin tekeleen itse, vaikka en oo käynyt yhtäkään kurssia graafista suunnittelua. Sen kyllä huomasi painovaiheessa, koska
kaikki mikä voi mennä pieleen - meni pieleen. Nyt oon kokemusta viisaampana lähdössä seuraavaan projektiin, joka on valokuvataiteen
kandidaatin työ. Valmistunkesäkuussa (ainakin toivottavasti) taidekasvatuksen osastolta maisteriksi. Sitten en oo enää "kahden tutkinnon
loukussa", josta opintosihteeri aikoinaan varoitteli. Jee.

Social media note: Pinterest glitch

Some months ago I started using Pinterest because I realized it's a handy tool if you're teaching art. For me the problem of Pinterest has been that the picture flow it provides is often overwhelming. I also feel that it's one of those social medias that reduces the time we spend looking at one picture. Pictures are like fast food and the quantity overcomes quality. Also many pictures circulate Pinterest without a tag or a link to the person who made the picture.

This morning when I opened Pinterest, the page had some problems (probably because of the new look). The page glitched and you couldn't even see one picture fully since it put all the pictures into a pile. I thought the error described well the nature of Pinterest.

Now the picture flow is so fast you can only see a glimpse of one picture. It is a fine day for the artists who spent hours and hours creating the pictures. Their work of art is now only a stripe in the sea of stripes. (I like the collages though).
